The IELTS Life Skills test is designed for people who need to prove their English speaking and listening skills as part of their visa or immigration application to the UK. Unlike the standard IELTS test, IELTS Life Skills focuses only on Speaking and Listening skills, and it is available at two levels:
- A1 โ for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) family route applications.
- B1 โ for UKVI indefinite leave to remain or citizenship applications.
Format and Structure
- Duration: The test takes between 16-22 minutes, depending on the level.
- Content: You will participate in a one-on-one conversation with an examiner and another test-taker, which mirrors real-life communication situations.
- Skills Assessed: Speaking and listening only (there is no reading or writing component).
The tasks include:
- Asking and answering questions,
- Exchanging information,
- Expressing opinions, and
- Making plans and decisions.
Levels and What to Expect:
A1 Level
This is a basic level test, focusing on simple everyday conversations. For example:
- Talking about your personal life, family, and surroundings.
- Answering questions about your daily routine.
- Describing basic topics, such as places, objects, and preferences.
B1 Level
This is more advanced and focuses on demonstrating the ability to:
- Engage in discussions, express views, and opinions on various topics.
- Plan with someone about an event, or respond to information on a given situation.
- Discuss problems, exchange opinions, and solve issues in daily life.
Overview of the IELTS Test Structure
The IELTS test format is divided into four main sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Hereโs a brief overview of each section:
1. Listening:
- Duration: Approximately 30 minutes.
- Format: Four sections with a total of 40 questions. Youโll listen to recordings and answer questions based on what you hear. The recordings include conversations and monologues in various contexts.
- Types of Questions: Multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labeling, form/note/table/summary completion.
2. Reading:
- Duration: 60 minutes.
- Format: Three sections with a total of 40 questions. The texts are based on a variety of topics and are taken from books, newspapers, and magazines.
- Types of Questions: Multiple choice, matching headings, identifying information (true/false/not given), matching features, sentence completion, summary completion.
3. Writing:
- Duration: 60 minutes.
- Format: Two tasks.
- Task 1: For the Academic module, youโll describe, summarize, or explain information from a graph, table, chart, or diagram. For the General Training module, youโll write a letter based on a given situation.
- Task 2: Youโll write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. Both modules require a clear and well-structured argument.
4. Speaking:
- Duration: 11-14 minutes.
- Format: A face-to-face/video-call interview with an examiner.
- Part 1: Introduction and general questions about yourself and familiar topics.
- Part 2: Youโll receive a task card with a topic and have 1 minute to prepare. You then speak for 1-2 minutes on the topic.
- Part 3: Discussion with the examiner about the topic from Part 2 and related issues.
Each section is scored individually, and the scores are then averaged to determine your overall band score.
